PROGRAM IN KIKUYU

The Hospital

Presbyterian Church East Africa (PCEA) Kikuyu Hospital had its beginnings in 1908 when Scottish missionaries founded a center to teach boys to read and write, a Bible teaching center and a first aid center which has grown into the PCEA Kikuyu Hospital. Located about 15 miles for the center of Nairobi and no more than a mile from the town of Kikuyu proper, the PCEA hospital serves patients from the surrounding semirural area, from the city of Nairobi, and from many other parts of Kenya and neighboring countries. The hospital features an outpatient clinic and six inpatient wards: male, female, maternity, orthopedic, pediatric and eye. Laboratory, pharmacy, X-ray unit, a large new theatre with three operating rooms are among the offerings at the hospital. A separate ophthalmic theater is available. Speciality care is offered through several clinics including diabetic, dermatological, infertility and rehabilitation and orthopedic surgery. A community based health care program and an internationally recognized eye unit operate from PCEA Kikuyu Hospital.
The PCEA Kikuyu Hospital has in excess of 120 general beds and 75 eye unit beds. Currently, there are two orthopedic surgeons, one general surgeon, three ophthalmic surgeons, five clinical officers (including CO/anaesthetists), a dermatologist, a highly qualified pharmacy and laboratory staff, six opticians/ophthalmic assistants, two physical therapists, two orthopedic technicians, a radiographer, and over 70 qualified nurses. Additional missionary and volunteer doctors and surgeons augment the medical staff on a regular basis. The most recent available data indicate that the hospital performed over 3,300 eye operations, 1,000 major operations (mostly orthopedic) and another 3,000 minor general operations. Two thousand infants were safely delivered and 11,000 children were immunized. The general hospital saw and treated 40,000 outpatients, while the Eye Unit treated 60,000 outpatients at the hospital and 16,000 outpatients on mobile eye safaris.
