Premedicine and the Liberal Arts Tradition

Becoming a physician is one of society's highest achievements and presents unique opportunities for self-fulfillment and service to humanity. Davidson College has a rich tradition in the preprofessional training of physicians, and its students have and continue to become leaders in the medical profession. A liberal arts education is widely recognized as the best preprofessional training for physicians. It exposes students to the world of ideas in science and the humanities, it deepens understanding of the human condition and it enhances the development of humane instincts. The mental discipline growing out of a rigorous liberal arts education prepares premedical students to meet the challenges and shoulder the responsibilities that await them as medical students and physicians. Most Davidson students who are interested in medicine train as allopathic physicians (M.D.), but osteopathic, podiatric and dental medicine are viable options for aspiring physicians.
