The Davidson Wildcat's Men's Lacrosse Team started the season with a win against the Furman Paladins on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon in Greensville, SC. The game started slow, with the first goal of the game scored late in the first quarter by first-year attackman Andrew Guard (IL), his first goal of the season in intercollegiate competition. The Wildcats finished the first quarter with two more goals (by sophomore attackman Rob Heppenstall (SC) and senior midfielder and team captain Garen Riedel (MA)), while the Davidson defense held Furman scoreless. Davidson's offense picked up in the second quarter, with the Wildcats scoring four goals, for a halftime score of 7-1. In the third quarter, Davidson scored four more goals, starting with a goal by sophomore midfielder Kyle Hynden (OH), while the defense again shut out the Paladins in the quarter. Furman did score one goal late in the fourth quarter, for a final score of 11-2.
Congratulations go to the Wildcats who made their debut with fine play in the season opener: attackmen Alex Gregor (NC), Andrew Guard, and Ben Starkweather; midfielders Kyle Hynden (deactivated last spring because of injury) and Diego Fildes-Torrijos (VA); defensemen Chris Childs (NC) and Paul Stroup (NC); and our new goal tender Karl Schmidt (NC). Special recognition go to sophomore goalie Karl Schmidt (with 11 saves), and the hustle for ground balls by first-year attackman Alex Gregor, sophomore midfielder Morgan Koukopoulos (NC), and senior defenseman and captain Geoff Fehling (PA). Scoring for the game was led by attackman Andrew Guard (3 goals, 1 assist), followed by attackman Rob Heppenstall (2 goals, 1 assist), attackman Alex Gregor (1 goal, 2 assists), Garen Riedel (2 goals), and one goal each by midfielders Diego Fildes-Torrijos (VA), Greg Means (NC), and Kyle Hynden (OH); midfielder Will Nexsen (VA) had one assist.
