Meizhou City, abounding in Hakka humane resources, is one of the major regions where the Hakka live in compact communities. Jiaying University, situated in this Hakka region, therefore, is responsible for excavating, sorting and spreading the local culture. Since the 80's, Hakka study has become a "focus of interest" in the academic world both at home and abroad. Jiaying University, taking advantage of the opportunity, timely established the Hakka Research Institute which bears a distinctive local feature. By now, considerable accomplishments have been made --16 monographs in the area of Hakka study and 11 issues of "Hakka Research Journals" have been published. Cooperative programs and information exchange are conducted between the Hakka Research Institute and Ecole Francaise Extreme Orient (France), Harvard University (USA), Middlebury College (USA), Kyushu International University (Japan), Singapore National University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Qinghua University (Taiwan), Chinese Social Science Academy, Zhongshan University (Canton)and Fujian Social Science Academy and other social scientific research institutions.

In recent 3 years, in particular, experts and professors from Middlebury College (USA), Harvard University (USA), Ecole Francaise Extreme Orient (France), Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Tokyo University (Japan) have been to the Hakka Research Institute to be visiting scholars and to conduct research and cooperation.
