In order to facilitate registration, the Classics
Department requires that all incoming students interested in taking
Latin at Davidson take the online placement examination. You need
to take the Placement Test before June 30. Students
enrolling in Latin 101 and 201 who have not taken the placement
test will be required to take the test on the first day of class.
The exam is deployed in a course management program named Blackboard
and will take about 30-45 minutes to complete. It will test students'
basic knowledge of Latin language, concentrating on basic grammatical
and cultural knowledge, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension.
For the Latin placement test, your UserID and password will be your
network ID and password; you will have received your ID and password
in the packet regarding registration.
The exam is used for course self-placement only,
and not for determining course credit. There is no need to study
for the test.
You must be a (rising) first-year-student in order to take the test
(all others may take the test only after
making arrangements with Dr.
Neumann). Your login information is contained in the package
you received from the Registrar's
Office.
You must have Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher, or Netscape
version 4.8 or higher installed. AOL users should download (for
free) Internet Explorer or Netscape as the AOL browser is problematic. Check
below for useful links.
At Davidson, we use Hans Ørberg's Lingua
Latina, a reading-based course. After taking the placement
test, students may place themselves into Latin 101 or 201 only
(see
Courses). Students
may not place themselves into Latin 102 .
Those students scoring above the 201 level should
contact Dr. Neumann
before registering. They will be invited to an interview to determine
possible exemption from the language requirement. A Latin AP score
of 4 or 5 yields a LAT 199 credit, which does not satisfy the language
requirement; performance on the web-based Latin placement test may,
however, result in converting that credit for LAT 199 to a credit
for LAT 201. Similar principles apply for credit through the International
Baccalaureate program.
