Field Placement in Education

Course Description

  • An Independent Study for students completing the Interdisciplinary Concentration in Education.  Areas of study and experience vary according to educational objectives and preferences of interested students. Requires approximately eighty in a public or private school and the production of a portfolio which will serve to synthesize the courses completed for the concentration. The independent study is under the direction and supervision of a faculty member who has approved a written contract arranged no later than the first week of the term. Prerequisite: Approval of the instructor.

Course Requirements

1.   Scheduled conferences with the supervising faculty member.  During the first week, the student will submit a reading list that—along with the fieldwork—will focus conferences.

2.   Field work of approximately eight hours per week for ten consecutive weeks in a public or private school.  Field work could include tutoring, conducting research,  supervising and leading after-school activities, aiding a teacher, etc. 

3.   Production of a Portfolio including:

  • Documentation relating to required fieldwork, such as reflective journals, letters, data, photographs, videos, notebooks, or any other materials agreed upon.

  • Five 2-3 page essays relating each concentration-course to the field work

  • The portfolio will be reviewed by all full-time members of the Education Department.

4.   A formal product—such as an extended paper, a poster, or a multi-media presentation—delivered to all full-time members of the Education Department and other invitees.
