Marianne Moore, born in 1887, was a contributor to and the last editor of The Dial. Her poetry roots itself in Little Magazines like Glebe, The Egoist, and Others; however, she was most recognized for her work through The Dial Award in 1924. Growing up, Moore lived with her grandfather, a Presbyterian pastor, until she attended Bryn Mawr College. Through her work for the New York Public Library, Moore met writers like William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens, who urged her to publish her poetry. Moore was considered an imagist, and collected most of her inspiration from nature. William Carlos Williams wrote of Moore’s poetry, “So that in looking at some apparently small object, one feels the swirl of great events” (Marianne Moore).
