Abstract

The rhetoric of imagism strives to burn the poem down to its bones so that each word serves a distinct purpose. Toomer expands this metaphorical goal of imagism within his poetry and short stories about lynching—his gorgeous, yet violent and grotesque images of lynchings add racial politics to the already political voice of imagism.
