Professor Abbott's major fields of interest include (1) modern
drama, (2) creative writing with emphasis on poetry, and (3)
religion and literature. He has written two books on modern
drama--Shaw and Christianity (1965) and The Vital Lie:
Reality and Illusion in Modern Drama (1989). His books of poems
include The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat (1989), A Small
Thing Like a Breath (1993), and The Search for Wonder in the
Cradle of the World (2000). All three books of poems are in
their second printings. He has just been awarded the Novello Prize
by the Novello Festival of Charlotte for his first novel, Leaving
Maggie Hope, which will be published in October of 2003 by
Novello Festival Press. Though Professor Abbott has retired from
full time teaching, he continues to teach one or two courses at the
college each year. In the fall of 2003 he will be teaching
"Introduction to Drama," a writing course for first-year students
which also fulfills the literature requirement. Professor Abbott is
active in state writing organizations, and currently serves as
Vice-President of the North Carolina Writers
Network.
