Sade's Justine: [Lolita] Justine is a persecuted heroine in the work by that name, written by the Marquis de Sade, a notorious French writer whose works are often considered blasphemous and pornographic. Clare Quilty is implicitly compared to de Sade on page 276.

Saguaro: [Lolita] A large cactus which is found in northern Mexico.

Schiller, Paul: [Lolita] A man in Coalmont working in a furniture business; Richard Schiller is the son of a cousin of his.

Schiller, Richard F.: [Lolita] a.k.a. Dick Skiller (Dick's Killer). The husband of eighteen-year old Dolores Haze. His hearing was damaged in Italy (presumably) during World War II. All indications show that he and Dolores went to Alaska where Dick had gotten a job in his highly-specialized mechanical field; they were to live with Dick's brother. Dick has a bad complexion and fine hands.

Schiller, Mrs. Richard F.: [Lolita] died in childbirth giving birth to a stillborn girl, on Christmas Day 1952. She is in actuality Dolores Haze, known by her married name.

Schwarzmann, Dr. Blanche: [Lolita] (Dr. Whitewoman Blackman) Speculates that at least12% of American adult males share Humbert's predilectons.

Scotty's Castle: [Lolita] Built by Walter Scott (also known as Death Valley Scotty) in the late 1920's in Death Valley, California. Scotty moved to Death Valley in search of gold in the late 1890's. He claimed to be unsuccessful in his search, yet he is notorious for his wild spending sprees. It remains a mystery how Scotty procurred the funds to build his castle. Today the site is one of Death Valley's most popular tourist attractions.

Sicilians: [Lolita] Inhabitants of Sicily, among whom, Humbert's claims to Dolores in an attempt to legitimize their relationship, it is regular practice for fathers and daughters to participate in incest.

Silver Spur Court: [Lolita] Humbert orders a two-room cabin at Silver Spur Court in Elphinstone. The cabin reminds Humbert of their first journey, and he reflects on how different things are now.

Snow, Colorado: [Lolita] Humbert takes Lolita to a Colorado resort between Snow and Elphinstone.

Stevenson, R.L.: [Lolita] Scottish novelist, poet, travel writer, and essayist, born in Edinburgh in 1850. He is most famous for his three classics: Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Said to be one of the best British writers of the late 19th century, Stevenson gained notoreity in England as an essayist. In 1876, Stevenson met an estranged American woman named Fanny Osborne, and his devotion to her led him to travel to San Francisco in 1879. He moved with his wife to Samoa in 1890, where he eventually died in 1894.

Swine, Mr.: [Lolita] Desk clerk at The Enchanted Hunters; Humbert mistakenly refers to him as Mr. Swoon.

Swoons: [Lolita] The family at The Enchanted Hunters that received the spare cot that was in room 49.

Sybil: [Lolita] Humbert's so-so prophetic aunt.
