Electronic Response in Word / Track Changes and Insert Comment

Track Changes

When you edit a text using the “Track Changes” function, a record is kept of the original document and any changes made to that document.  To track changes:

1.      Go to the Tools pull-down menu, select “Track changes”, then “Highlight Changes.”

2.      Check the box next to “Track changes while editing” and click “O.K.”

3.      Click on “Options” if you want to change the default format (fonts, etc.) for the changes.

To replace text, highlight the text you want to change and begin typing the correction.  The student’s text will be maintained but struck out, followed by your correction.  You can also drag and drop text.  If you don’t want to strike out anything, you can put your cursor anywhere in the text to insert words or punctuation.

Insert Comment

The “Comment” function allows you to make discursive comments that pop up in a box when the student puts his/her cursor over a section of the text that you’ve highlighted.  To insert comments:

1.      Highlight the text you want to comment on.

2.      Go to the Insert pull-down menu and highlight “Comment.”

3.      Type your remark next to the number in the box that appears below the text window.

Customizing Toolbars

To make the use of these (and other) functions more convenient, you can put the corresponding icons as a button in one of your toolbars.

2.      Click on the “Commands” tab and highlight “Tools.”

3.      Scroll down to “Track Changes” in the box on the right.

4.      Click on the “Track Changes” icon and drag it up to your toolbar at the top.

For the “Comment” button:

1.      Go to the Tools pull-down menu and highlight “Customize.”

2.      Click on the “Commands” tab and highlight “Insert.”

3.      Scroll down to “Comment” in the box on the right.

4.      Click on the “Comment” icon and drag it up to your toolbar (you can also drag up the “Delete Comment” icon, which is convenient).
