Bremen on the Web

Bremen is the smallest federal state in Germany, covering only 400 square kilometers.  Composed of two parts, Freie Hansestadt Bremen and Bremerhaven, Bremen is an international seaport located on the North Sea, second in importance only to Hamburg.  Bremen has a total population of 681,722, of which approximately 550,000 live in the city of Bremen, making it the 10th largest city in Germany.

Besides being an important seaport, several other industries also have a strong presence in Bremen.  The automobile industry, electronics, steel, shipbuilding, and aerospace industry also contribute greatly to the wealth of the state.  The technology sector is also growing rapidly, thus helping Bremen make the transition into the new economy.  The presence of modern technology can be witnessed in the headquarters of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven and the Universum Science Center in Bremen

Although few companies maintain their headquarters in Bremen, many famous names either have production facilities there or use the port as their gateway into Germany.  Daimler-Chrysler, Siemens, Phillips, and Kraft are all able to place the label "Made in Bremen" on many of their products.  Bremen does, however, have one export that it can truly call its own:  the world famous brewer Becks-Gruppe.
