Hessen on the Web

The capital of Hessen is Wiesbaden, but its economic center is found in Frankfurt.  Frankfurt is the financial capital of Europe.  The European Central Bank (ECB) has its headquarters here, along with several other financial institutions:  Deutsche Bank, HypoVereins Bank, and Commerzbank.  Frankfurt is the home of the Euro and the true center of international commerce on continental Europe.

Hessen is not simply a financial capital, but also a center of important industry.  Two of Germany's largest pharmaceutical companies have their headquarters in Hessen:  Aventis in Frankfurt and Merck in Darmstadt.  Additionally, electronics and technology giant EHG Elektroholding GmbH, a division of Daimler-Chrysler, is based here.

Hessen is the Bundesland, in which the Main River joins the Rhine River.  This intersection is a very large industrial center for the machine parts, locomotive, and automobile industries.  The General Motors division, Opel, maintains its headquarters in Frankfurt.

The Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport on continental Europe and sixth largest in the world.  Combining this fact with the fact that Frankfurt is the junction of two major railroad lines, makes Hessen a major hub of European transportation.
