After Hitler assumed power in 1933 the Berlin Stock Market collapsed, leaving only a number of small, regional exchanges in Germany. As recently as 1990, there were ten regional exchanges, the largest of which was Frankfurt. The German government has been making efforts in recent years to transfer power away from these smaller exchanges and to the Frankfurt exchange. Despite recent improvements and increasing international
importance, the Frankfurt exchange still lags behind the New York Stock
Exchange, NASDAQ, the Tokyo Exchange, and the London Exchange. In
fact, a quarter of Germany's corporations, or Aktiongessellschaften,
are still traded on the London Exchange. Some other recent changes in the Deutsche Börse include the introduction of a computer network-based exchange similar to the NASDAQ, known as the Neuer Markt. The Neuer Markt is notable in the predominance of technology and small-cap stocks.
