Rheinland-Pfalz on the Web

Rheinland-Pfalz's history goes back further than any other place in Germany.  Beginning with the city of Trier, the ancient Romans first settled the region and made it their capital of commerce in northern Europe. Karl Marx, a man that had a great deal of influence upon twentieth-century economies, was born in Trier.  

The influence of the Romans can still be seen today in more than just the ruins of Roman architecture common to Rheinland-Pfalz.  Here, along the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, is the largest wine-producing region in Germany. 

Most of the industry in Rheinland-Pfalz is located in the cities along the Rhine River, such as Koblenz and the capital city of Mainz.  The city of Ludwigshafen is the home to the largest chemical company in Europe, BASF
