Saarland on the Web
Das
Saarland is a small Bundesland in southwestern Germany, which
borders both Luxemburg and France. In fact, France is the largest
trading partner of das Saarland, not Germany. In the early 1950s,
the people of das Saarland voted to be a member of the Federal Republic of
Germany. Many citizens remain bilingual in the region, speaking both
German and French. The largest city and capital of the federal state is Saarbrücken.
The industry of das Saarland is focused upon research and
discovery. The chemical industry maintains a strong presence in the
region. Additionally, like many other regions of Germany, machine
building and metal working also employ a large segment of the
population.
