Sachsen
is easily the most industrialized Bundesland of the former East
Germany. Sachsen experienced a great deal of western and foreign
investment in the 1990s, and the increase in modern industrial plants here
is
far greater than investments made in the other Neuebundesländer. The city of Zwickau
now has a new Volkswagen assembly
plant, and many of the trains built in Germany are now assembled in
Sachsen.
The
city of Leipzig is currently trying to
recreate itself as an historical tourist destination, but Sachsen is
attempting to become more than just a place of music and philosophy.
The city where Bach became famous is the home to the largest
terminal train station in Europe, and it is Germany's gateway to eastern
Europe.
Other major cities in Sachsen include Chemnitz
and the Hauptstadt Dresden.
