Thüringen on the Web

Thüringen, known as "Deutschlands grünes Herz," is located in central Germany and is one of the most important locations of German history.   Eisenach is the birthplace of J. S. Bach; Carl Zeiss founded his work in optics in Jena; and Weimar was the home to German classicism and the Weimar government.

Carl Zeiss Gruppe still maintains a position as an optics leader in Jena and has remained one of Germany's most innovative and respected technological innovators for over a 150 years.  Other industry in Thüringen can be found in Eisenach, where Opel recently began a sizable operation.  The government of the federal state recently began a major initiative to attract more such technical jobs to the area.

Due to Thüringen's important place in history and its large amounts of parkland, tourism has also become important to the region's economy.
