Attendance at all class meetings and screenings is required. Any unexcused
absence will count as ten points off the final course grade. If you are
ill or must be absent for some valid reason, discuss this with me beforehand.
Essays are due in class as noted in the schedule. Unexcused late papers
not accepted. (= grade of 0)
Rewrites are due in class as well. Late rewrites not accepted. (= grade
of 0)
Grades: essays are graded on a 100-point scale (96-100 = A, 90-95 = A-,
87-89=B+, 83-86=B, 80-82 = B-, 77-79=C+, 73-76=C, 70-72 = C-, 67-89=D+,
63-66=D, 60-62 = D-, 0-59 = F)
40% = all essays together
30% = research paper
20% = class participation
10% = reading quizlets
Use Modern Language Association or Chicago style (see the most recent edition
of the MLA Handbook or the Chicago Manual of Style which
can be found in the library or ordered at any bookstore).
Always use a 10-point Courier or similar font; double-space; 1-inch margins;
name, date, and essay number top right; page numbers lower right; title
top center; no running headers or footers; no title pages, binders, or
folios; staple.
Please note that computer, disk, printer, or other electronic crashes and
screw-ups are not legitimate excuses for late essays. So: save
early, save often, print two copies and keep one.
Always turn in both the graded first version of each essay and the rewrite.
Clip them together.
Essay critiques (weeks 7 and 15) should be a solid paragraph each, printed
on a separate page in two copies each, one for the author and one for me.
