Geschichten über meiner Familie als Missionare:  (Mein Urgroßvater studierte bei einer Missionschule in Deutschland, and dann kam nach Amerika.  Er war Prediger in North Dakota, Ohio, und Kanada.)

Von meinem Großonkel:  „The first years in Neche were war years when the attitude toward German born persons, especially those newly emigrated and un-naturalized was, to say the least, confrontational and often very ugly.  I do not recall the event, but I know that dad spent a half day in the Neche jail.  No particular reason was necessary.  I also recall slanderous remarks made to dad by townsmen when I was with him to pick up a shipment at the railroad station”

,,When I reached public school age there was a period of several years when it was necessary for me to find different routes home – a distance of 2 or 3 blocks – to escape regular beating by French-Indian peers, or older.  Getting roughed up was not an uncommon event.  On one occasion while running from them I ran into a tightly strung barbed wire fence.  One of the barbs punctured me just below the right eye.”

,,It must be mentioned that the congregation very faithfully conducted not only Sunday School, but also a summer “Deutsche Schule” in German.  Very much of the time was spent learning German.”
