German 499      The Novel of Education         Senior Colloquium

Spring 1999                   Mondays 3-6                    Preyer 210
The Course

In this seminar we will learn about the GermanBildungsroman through these four novels:  Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, Thomas Mann's Der Zauberberg, Musil's Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften, and Christa Wolf's Kindheitsmuster.  We will supplement these novels with critical essays and some background readings in the novel and in narrative theory.  Students will write a substantial research essay for presentation to the class late in the semester.

German Majors
Senior German majors will meet additionally once each week with me to prepare for the departmental comprehensive exams, to be taken in mid-April. We will use Blickfeld Deutsch (available in the bookstore) as a preparation guide. See the departmental reading list and have your own supplementary list of additions to the Schwerpunkte ready for me by the beginning of February.

Guidelines
Do all the reading on time. Don't miss class.  Don't be afraid to ask questions or to say what you think. Have questions to ask and thoughts to say.   Be prepared for weekly reading quizzes. Formal paper presentations during which you will read your papers to the group and then respond to questions take place during the last three sessions. Think early on about when you would like to present yours. Use MLA style for your papers and know the honor code. Feel free to call me or Professor Henke with questions or to chat.
