III. Expectations
This paper hypothesizes that newspaper editorial endorsements
are positively related to media coverage, but the real question is to what
extent the relationship exists. Does an endorsement guarantee an increase
in coverage over ensuing days? How powerful is the link between the two?
These are the relevant questions this paper seeks to answer definitively
through analyzing coverage in five newspapers.
This paper predicts that two variables will be significant for all candidates:
the number of candidates in the race when observations are made, and the total
circulation size of the newspapers that provide coverage to the candidates.
