Academic Program

The Semester-in-India and Nepal program is governed by certain resolutions passed by the faculty of Davidson College. Accordingly each participating student is required to take four courses offered as part of the academic program.
Pass/Fail (quality of work equal to a grade of C- or above) grades will be given for SOU 310 (India Past and Present) and SOU 385(Public Health in India). SOC 354 (Issues in Contemporary India) and the course offered by the director, SOU 390 Religions of India  will receive letter grades.* Should non-Davidson students require letter grades for SOU310 and SOU385, the director of the program will give his/her assessment of a student's performance, in terms of a letter grade, in a statement to the registrar of the student's college.
Lectures and field trips for the courses are arranged exclusively for the Program. Speakers, who are invited from all over India, are recognized authorities in their fields. Usually classes are conducted Monday through Friday.   Weekends are kept for field trips and rest. All classes will be conducted in a building within a two minute walk from the Guest House.

Methods of assessment for these courses vary.  Students will be required to submit summaries of the lectures and to take the final examination. The art history course will require writing assignments on sites visited.
