Mission Statement

The Sociology Department combines classroom instruction, research experience, and service learning to provide students a full-range view of the issues addressed by sociologists. The department seeks to expand students’ awareness of the often-subtle social structures that are shaped by groups, organizations, and institutions.  Students participate in a variety of "hands-on" activities, including:

• Designing and conducting research,
• Working in the field in correctional facilities,
• Interviewing research subjects and analyzing their responses, and
• Traveling abroad to learn about other cultures.

The fundamental goal of the Department of Sociology at Davidson College is to understand and analyze distinctive social processes through sociological theory, methods of research design, and qualitative and quantitative analyses.

The department teaches courses that fulfill requirements in:

• The core curriculum,
• Cultural diversity,
• Concentrations (e.g., Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, International Studies)
• Programs (e.g., South Asia, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies)
• Major in Sociology

Members of the department also teach, advise, and supervise senior theses and independent studies.

After graduation, our majors move on to similarly diverse pursuits, including graduate study, professional school, public health and policy research, and social service work in an array of settings both here and abroad.
