BACKGROUND

I am a sociocultural anthropologist with research and teaching specialties in East Asia (particularly South Korea), social movements, gender and feminist theory, reproduction, motherhood, and breastfeeding. My dissertation research was on feminist activism that dealt with violence against women in the emerging civil society of 1990s South Korea. I have also lived in Japan and China. More recently, I have studied breastfeeding advocacy as a social movement, mainly in North America, and engage with that movement as an advocacy anthropologist. I have done extensive volunteer work offering skilled breastfeeding support to parents and am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
