Ph.D. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
B.A. Pfeiffer College
I received my B.A. degree from Pfeiffer College and my Ph.D. in differential geometry from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After a postdoctoral position at Rice University, I began teaching at Davidson College in 1982.
My mathematical interests include analysis, geometry, problem solving, recreational mathematics, and the history of mathematics. An article that I published in The College Mathematics Journal received both the George Pólya Award and the Merten M. Hasse Prize for expository writing from the Mathematical Association of America. I regularly collaborate with my co-authors on new editions of the textbook Calculus, by Anton, Bivens, and Davis.
