Religion Department

The Presbyterians who founded Davidson College in 1837 accorded great importance to religious instruction. The Religion Department continues to affirm the importance of the study of religion as part of a balanced liberal arts education, and has broadened its horizons to the study of religious expression across many different cultures. Along with other departments committed to the liberal arts, the Religion Department shares in the task of cultivating a humane literacy that responds to the mystery and meaning of human life.

Cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, and critical perspectives inform a wide spectrum of courses that study:

  • Systems of belief and patterns of religious behavior
  • History of religious traditions
  • Function of religion in society
  • Forms of religious expression: sacred narrative, scripture, theological, and philosophical reflection

Students wishing to explore the major in religion are encouraged to visit our religion major page to view curricular requirements. Students who major in other disciplines but still seek in-depth study of religion may wish to consider a minor in religion.
