The
Register of
Debates is not a verbatim account, but a compilation of the debates and
activities from the 18th Congress, 2nd Session (Dec. 6, 1824) through the
25th Congress (Oct. 16, 1837), including important state papers and public
documents with laws enacted during the sessions. Since speeches were
not recorded verbatim, the Members of Congress were invited to amend or
revise their speeches before printing, this practice continues on today,
although significant alterations are prohibited.
