| As
part of the ACS Information Fluency Project for 2001, students from
Shireen Campbell's English 101 course investigated the causes and/or
effects of a major historic event at Davidson College. Their
investigation resulted in five class web pages, one per team, on the
following topics: The Burning of Old Chambers, Civil War and
Davidson, Coeducation and Davidson, and Coeducation and Athletics,
Integration at Davidson. |
This project improved student information fluency
by
-
emphasizing
analysis of primary research materials. Working closely with
Davidson College archivist Jan Blodgett and their class professor
Shireen Campbell, students improved their ability to evaluate
source materials as part of the research process.
-
promoting
strengthened electronic technical skills - specifically, web page
authoring and threaded collaboration - for both students and their
professor, who worked closely with fellow student JiHoon Hwang and
instructional technologist Kristen Eshleman in preparing for this
project. Students also gained experience in scanning and preparing
digital documents from scanned images.
-
encouraging
deepened student understanding of web-based writing and
accentuating how a non-linear web-based presentation affords a
more complex understanding of cause/effect than that offered by a
traditional print-based presentation of research.
-
both
improving source availability (through web posting of specified
sources) and publicizing Davidson’s considerable archival
materials to the campus community and to other ACS institutions.
