Vice-President for Business and Finance
In 1913, Davidson College hired its first Business Manager. Prior to that time, managerial duties were assigned to individual faculty members. In 1965, the position of treasurer-business manager was established to oversee the operations of the physical plant, dormitories, laundry, bookstore, guest house, and all college finances. In 1971, the new position of Vice President for Finance and Development was created. The Vice Presidency oversaw four divisions: Business Manager, Comptroller, Development, and Personnel and Administrative Services. By 1987, Davidson College had reorganized the position into the Vice President of Business and Finance. This present administrative position oversees the areas of Controller, Human Resources, Physical Plant, Auxiliary Services, Public Safety, Administrative Services, and General Counsel. The Davidson College Archives has the Administrative Records from 1930-1996 of the office of Vice President of Business and Finance and its preceeding offices(RG 4/1.1). These files cover a variety of committees and activities related to the financial management of the college. Subjects covered in the files include campus landscape architecture, correspondence related to campus buildings, faculty salary studies, athletic surveys, the Davidson Community Trust, college investments in South Africa, Davidson College Presbyterian Church, the Lake Norman Company, and the Pines Retirement Community. The Archives also has the historical records of the office of Vice President of Business and Finance (RG 4/1.4). The historical records include early Treasurer's Reports and ledgers and records for special projects or activities such as the Davidson Cemetery, Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Duke Endowment, the E.
