In 1813 Congress established the beginnings of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) (3 Stat.140) to provide the American public access to the Government's information. Since that time Depository libraries have been responsible for maintaining and preserving governmental information for the public's use. This information is provided to these libraries and in turn they provide government information at no cost to the public. There are approximately 1,350 depository libraries across the country and 53 Regional Libraries. Davidson College Library has been receiving public documents since the mid 1800's and became a selective depository library "officially" by senate designation on April 10, 1893. Since that time, the library's collection of federal documents has grown to include more than 200,000 publications with information on legislation, census, health, economic information, and countless other subjects in various formats including paper, microfiche, and electronic access. The Library's documents collection is rich in primary sources including the American State Papers, Annals and Debates of Congress, Journals of the Continental Congress, House and Senate Journals, the Serial Set, Statutes at Large, the Congressional Globe, the Congressional Record, Public Papers of the President, the U.S. Code and Code of Federal Regulations, the U.S. Supreme Court Opinions/Decisions, U.S. Government Manual, Official Bulletin of World War I, and the Official Record of the War of the Rebellion.
