To find advertisements:
Microfilm: the Magazine is filmed as part of the Sunday New York Times and usually appears after the main sequence of the paper.
Online: on the "advanced search" page, type "section(magazine)" and then limit by date. Finally, click on the "more search options" tab at the bottom of the advanced search screen and from the "Document Type" drop-down menu, choose "Display ad."

To find international news: do a "Guided News Search." In the first drop down menu, "News Category," choose "World News." In the second drop-down menu, "News Sources," select the appropriate region of the world. Enter key words and then adjust the date range as appropriate.
You can also select "Non-English Language News" as the news category to find international news.
