      • Methodist Church
        In 1843, the Methodist Episcopal Church split into the (Northern) Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; each was a separate ecclesiastical body, with its own missionary boards. The churches remained separate until 1939, when they merged with the Methodist Protestant Church to form the Methodist Church.

          The Hakluyt Society, founded in 1846, publishes narratives of voyages, travels, and expeditions as well as other early works on geography, navigation, and exploration. Documents include correspondence and journals of early explorers of Latin America. Works originally written in other languages are translated into English. To date, more than 270 titles have been published in three series.
