17th & 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers
Off-Campus access available through proxy server to current Davidson College students, faculty, and staff.
(c. 1603-1800) Contains digital facsimiles of approximately 1,270 seventeenth and eighteenth-century English newspapers from the British Library's Burney Collection; includes many London papers as well as some English provincial, Scottish, Irish, and colonial North American papers. The full text of these newspapers, including all articles, advertisements, and other contents, is keyword-searchable.
19th Century Masterfile - Poole's Plus
Off-Campus access available through proxy server to current Davidson College students, faculty, and staff.
Contains two sets of indexes. The periodical indexes include Poole's Index to Periodical Literature (1802-1907), Stead's Index to Periodicals (1890-1902), and Richardson's Index to Periodical Articles in Religion (1890-1899). The government documents indexes include the Subject Index to U.S. Patents (1790-1873), Descriptive Catalogue of Government Publications of the U.S. (1774-1881), and Hansard's Index to the Debates of the House of Commons and House of Lords (1803-1830). The E. H. Little Library has print equivalents for Poole's Index and the Descriptive Catalogue of the Government Publications of the U. S..

    Includes Freedom's Journal, Colored American, The North Star, Frederick Douglass Papers, National Era, Provincial Freeman, and The Christian Recorder.
  • The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective
    Includes selected articles from The New York Herald, The Charleston Mercury, and the Richmond Enquirer.
  • Godey's Lady's Book
    Includes articles and over 18,000 illustrations and color plates from this important nineteenth-century magazine for women.
American Broadsides & Ephemera, Series I

(c. 1760-1900) Contains more than 30,000 digital facsimiles of broadsides and ephemera, including advertisements, handbills, trade cards, theatre and music programs, stock certificates, menus, and many other works.

A collection of over 9 million primary source documents and archival materials related to American history and culture. Includes a wide variety of materials, including manuscripts, government documents, pamphlets, books, and other publications as well as photographs, prints, maps, sheet music, video clips, and sound files. (Sept. 1989 to present) Contains the full text of current and back issues of the Chronicle of Higher Education as well as daily updates, the annual Almanac, Web extras and updates, and much more.
Davidsonian
Off-Campus access available; no password required.
(1914-2006) A digital collection of volumes 1-97 of the Davidsonian, The Davidson College newspaper. Also includes a history of the paper, a list of its editors, and other related information.
The Davidson College Library has print and microfilm versions of the newspaper as well.

(1805-1920) Contains digital facsimiles of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Latin American newspapers; the full text of these newspapers, including all articles, advertisements, and other contents, is keyword-searchable. When complete, this database will contain over 35 newspapers.

A collection of primary source materials related to America history and culture from the antebellum period through reconstruction. Includes page images from books and journals published in the nineteenth century.
The Cornell University Making of America site provides access to over 100,000 articles from journals such as The Atlantic Monthly (1857-1901) and Harper's (1850-1899) as well as access to over 250 books.
The University of Michigan Making of America site provides access to over 50,000 journal articles and 8,500 books.

(1811-1849) An index to The Weekly Register, Niles National Register, and Niles Weekly Register newspapers published between 1811 and 1849. The Register offered concise, comprehensive coverage of national and international events and was known for its lack of bias. The Library also has print (1811-1831) and microfiche (1811-1849) copies of the Niles Register.
