Books | Chapters & Essays in Books

Books

Use library catalogs to find books, videos, government documents, journals, magazines, and newspapers.  The Davidson College Library Catalog contains information about materials owned by Davidson.  WorldCat lists materials held in libraries around the world.  If Davidson does not have a copy of what you need, use Interlibrary Loan to request it.

When searching for books and other materials in a catalog, try searching by keyword, author, or title.  You may also search by Library of Congress subject headings.  To locate appropriate subject headings, do a keyword search and then browse records. Helpful subject headings include:

To see electronic books held by Davidson, see ebrary, a collection of over 38,000 e-books published by over 220 academic, trade, and professional publishers. It covers all subject areas and includes tools that allow you to create your own virtual bookshelf, bookmark pages, and add and save notes and highlights.

There are also some books indexed in PAIS International. To find books in this database, choose the advanced search; in the "Publication Type" limit, enter PT=(book).


Chapters & Essays in Books

To find chapters and essays in books on your topic, go to the Library Catalog and do a title keyword search for your topic. This search will produce results with the keyword(s) in book titles and in chapter titles (if included in the record).

In addition, you may want to search in the Essay and General Literature Index, which indexes essays published in books and edited collections. Coverage is from 1900 to present.

To find journals owned by the library, go to the Library Catalog, do a subject keyword search for your topic and limit your search by format to newspapers and periodicals. Clicking on the Periodicals link in the red bar on the library catalog search page will also allow you to browse journals by subject category.

      (1915 to present) Contains citations, with brief abstracts, to articles in over 800 English-language journals in public affairs. Also indexes government documents, pamphlets, directories, agency reports, and some books. Covers government, public administration, public policy, court decisions, political science, and international relations.

    • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
      (1975 to present) Includes citations to articles appearing in over 1,000 political science journals. Covers the fields of comparative politics, economic policy, international relations, and political economy, among others. International in scope.

      (1932 to present) Contains the full text of review and overview articles on important topics in the Biomedical, Life, Physical, and Social Sciences. Includes the Annual Review of Political Science and the Annual Review of Law and Social Science.

    • ASSIA: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts
      (1987 to present) Indexes articles on topics related to health, economics, education, psychology, race relations, social services, and sociology. International in scope.

    • Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS) Online
      (1971 to present) Indexes articles, essays in edited collections, conference proceedings, and other materials on all subjects related to East, Southeast, and South Asia. Also lists books published between 1971 and 1992. International in scope; most citations are to works written in Western languages.

    • CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online
      (1991 to present) A collection of resources on international affairs. Includes citations to journal articles and books; also includes the full text of over 400 working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, policy briefs, and economic indicators. A small selection of journals and books are also available full text. The collection is updated regularly.

    • Contemporary Women's Issues
      (1992 to present) Provides the full text of articles from over 130 periodicals, as well as the text of newsletters, reports, pamphlets, fact sheets, and guides on a wide range of gender-related issues.

    • Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS)
      (1935 to present) Indexes journal articles, books, book chapters, and conference papers on topics related to Latin America. Fields covered include anthropology, archaeology, art, economics, geography, history, international relations, language and literature, music, philosophy, political science, and sociology.

    • Index Islamicus
      (1906 to present) Indexes articles from over 3,000 journals as well as books, conference proceedings, and book reviews. Covers a wide variety of subjects and topics related to Islam, the Middle East, and the Muslim world including art, economics, history, law, literature, philosophy, political science, and religion.

    • LexisNexis Academic
      Provides access to a wide variety of legal documents, including articles from law reviews and journals.

      (2003 to present) Provides access to the full text of papers from the annual meetings of the American Political Science Association.

      (c. mid-1990s to present) A searchable collection of full-text articles from journals published by university and scholarly presses.

      Contains the full text of 36 peer-reviewed journals published by the Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress) as well as working papers, preprints, and other "grey literature" from a number of institutional repositories. Bepress publishes journals in the fields of Business, Economics, Law, Marketing, Medicine, Political Science, and Public Affairs.

    • Social Sciences Abstracts Full Text
      (1907 to present) Indexes articles in over 500 English-language periodicals in the fields of anthropology, communication, corrections, economics, environmental studies, ethics, gender studies, geography, international relations, law, political science, psychology, sociology, and related subjects. Includes the full text of selected articles from 1995 to the present.

    • Web of Knowledge
      (c. 1900 to present) A multidisciplinary resource that provides citations to articles in over 10,000 journals in the social sciences, humanities, and sciences.

Finding Newspaper Articles

The Library subscribes to many newspapers, both national and international. Current ones are usually recieved in print; many of the older ones are preserved in microform. To search for a particular title, go to the Periodicals link in the red bar on the library catalog search page and do a Title begins with search for the title. (Don't forget to drop any preceding articles: a, an, the!)

  • Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Reports
    (1974-1996) Contains the full-text of the U.S. Government’s FBIS Daily Reports, the English-language translations of foreign news broadcasts, including clandestine broadcasts from occupied territories, used by U.S. intelligence services, policy makers, and analysts.  A valuable primary source collection for historical and political science research.

  • LexisNexis Academic
    (c. 1980 to present) Provides the full text of articles from local, national, and international newspapers, magazines, and trade journals as well as newswires, business information, patents, legal documents, and transcripts of radio and television broadcasts.

  • Library PressDisplay
    Contains full-page, full-cover images of over 400 national and international newspapers; includes the current day’s papers as well as a 60-day archive.

  • Newspaper Source Plus
    Contains the full text of articles in over 149 national and international newspapers, including The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, and the Washington Post; also contains selected full text from 410 additional U.S. newspapers and transcripts of radio and television broadcasts.

  • Westlaw Campus Research
    Contains articles from magazines, national and international newspapers, and business, professional, and trade journals as well as newswires, newsletters, and transcripts of television broadcasts.

  • World News Connection
    (1995 to present) Contains full-text, English-language summaries and translations of foreign news reports, conference proceedings, radio and television broadcasts, periodicals, non-classified technical reports, and other local media sources from around the world.  Covers political, scientific, socioeconomic, technical, and environmental issues and events.  These materials are provided by the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) to the National Technical Information Service (NTIS).

  • Amnesty International
    Use the Amnesty International library to find the organization’s reports on various countries and issues.  You may search by country and/or issue and can limit documents to “reports.”

  • CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online
    (1991 to present) A collection of resources on international affairs. Includes citations to journal articles and books; also includes the full text of over 400 working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, policy briefs, and economic indicators.   • Country Reports on Human Rights Practices (U.S. Department of State)
    This website contains the U.S. Department of State’s Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, which is submitted to the U.S. Congress each year.  Each report is organized by region and then country and covers internationally recognized human rights as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; reports from 1999-2008 (the most recent) are posted here.  This site also contains additional browsable information about human rights, including the 2009 Trafficking in Persons Report and the Annual Report on International Religious Freedom.

  • Human Rights Watch World Reports

  • Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Annual Reports
    These reports come from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (Organization of American States). They may be browsed by year, country, or resolution.

  • International Committee of the Red Cross Annual Report
    This site contains reports, organized by country activity, from the International Committee of the Red Cross.  Reports are available from 1994 to present.

  • State of the World's Children (UNICEF)
    These reports, from UNICEF, examine issues affecting children around the world. This link brings you to the 2010 report; there is also a searchable back archive of PDFs.
