The Belk Scholarship allowed Steve Kaliski to take many risks that he might not have otherwise. He chose to study abroad on Davidson's classics program, which at the time he thought had no connection to his interests in English and theatre but retrospectively found very relevant. He also spent two summers in Cambridge, one as part of the Davidson program and the other for individual thesis research. When it came time to write his honors thesis, Kaliski surprised himself by deciding to write a novella.
After graduating from Davidson, Kaliski moved to New York to jumpstart his acting career and intern at an off-Broadway theatre. He ended up starting his own theatre company with a friend, and they produced plays nationally and internationally for almost three years. Directing began to appeal to him more than acting, leading him to get his MFA in directing from Brooklyn College. He has since been teaching at Fordham University and Brooklyn College.
