Postcolonial studies faculty reading group

Faculty discussion of some foundational works as led by Scott Denham:

  • Aimé Césaire's Discourse on Colonialism (1955)
  • Frantz Fanon's Wretched of the Earth (1961), chapter 1, "Concerning Violence" and chapter 4, "On National Culture"
  • Black Skin, White Masks (1952), chapter, 1 "The Negro and and Language" and chapter 5 "The Fact of Blackness"
  • Some work in the discussion leader's field of expertise: this time, a brief excerpt from Susanne Zantop's Colonial Fantasies: Conquest, Family, and Nation in Precolonial Germany, 1770-1870. (Durham: Duke UP, 1997), and her chapter "Colonial Legends, Postcolonial Legacies" in A User's Guide to German Cultural Studies, eds. Scott Denham, Irene Kacandes and Jonathan Petropoulos (Ann Arbor: Univ. of Michigan Press, 1997).
