The Piedmont’s Bronze Age Confederate Monuments: A Quasi Archaeological Report

Dr. Gary R. Freeze, the William R. Weaver Professor of Humanities at Catawba College, will discuss the tarnished sentinels to something presumed “lost”, yet endlessly “not forgotten” in the American South. The recently resumed combat over public display of Confederate monuments has emboldened some scholars to maneuver beyond the present parameters of postmodern culture wars. This presentation—using as artifacts the monuments within an hour’s drive from Davidson—examines their “modality” in conventional terms, but speculates in new ways about their “mettle”.
