Reference Tools

Use reference tools to find background information on a topic and to develop keywords for searching in library catalogs and article databases.

Contains over 38,000 e-books published by over 220 academic, trade, and professional publishers; covers all subject areas.  Also includes tools that allow you to create your own virtual bookshelf, bookmark pages, and add and save notes and highlights.

WorldCat
Lists books, videos, periodicals, and other materials held by libraries around the world.  Search WorldCat to identify additional books on your topic and then order the books on interlibrary loan.
Search Syntax
Truncation:  use an asterisk *.
Phrase Searching:  insert a “w” between the words in a phrase (for example, “cold w war”).
Wildcard:  use a question mark ?.

  • ACS Web Editions & ACS Legacy Archives
    (c. 1879 to present) Provides the full text of journals published by the American Chemical Society.  The Davidson College Library has access to the complete Legacy Archives (1879-1995) and to recent content in many, but not all, ACS journals.

  • General Science Abstracts Full Text
    (1984 to present) Indexes articles in over 250 English-language periodicals in a variety of science disciplines, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental science, food and nutrition, genetics, mathematics, medicine, physics, and zoology.  Includes the full text of selected articles from 1995 to the present.

  • LexisNexis Environmental
    (1975 to present) Includes Environment Abstracts, which indexes over 650 environmental sciences journals.  LexisNexis Environmental also contains full-text articles from newspapers, trade journals, consumer magazines, newsletters, and more than 40 law reviews as well as codes and regulations from federal and state agencies.

  • Scientific American Archive Online
    (1993 to the present) Contains the full text of articles from Scientific American and Scientific American Mind.  Includes color pdfs.

  • SciFinder Scholar
    (1907 to present) Includes the following Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) databases:  Ca plus, which contains over 30 million references to journal articles, patents, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations; CAS Registry, which contains information about over 40 million chemical substances.  Also includes Medline (1950 to present).  Note:  Only one person may access this database at any one time.  When you are finished, please log off.

  • TOXNET
    (Approx. 1996 to present) A collection of databases containing information on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas.  Some databases, like the Hazardous Substance Data Bank (HSDB), contain factual information; others, like TOXLINE, contain citations to journal articles, books, and technical reports.

  • Health Source
    (1984 to present) Provides indexing, abstracting, and some full text from over 255 periodicals covering nutrition, exercise, medical self-care, drugs and alcholog, and much more.  It also provides full text for over 1,065 pamphlets and 23 books.  Full text coverage begins in January 1990.

  • Medline (PubMed)
    (1950 to present) Includes citations and abstracts to articles in over 5,2000 biomedical, life sciences, behavioral sciences, chemical sciences, and bioengineering journals.  This version of Medline is from the National Library of Medicine, which also provides links to some full-text articles as well as access to other health-related databases.

  • Medlineplus
    Provides general and consumer information on diseases and health-related topics.  Also provides links to medical dictionaries and encyclopedias, and lists of hospitals, physicians, organizations, and websites.

  • Academic Search Premier
    (1975 to present) Indexes over 8,000 popular and scholarly periodicals and provides the full text of articles from 4,500 of these periodicals.  Also indexes several newspapers, including the Christian Science Monitor, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

    A searchable archive of the back issues of major scholarly journals.

  • LexisNexis Academic
    (c. 1980 to present) Provides the full text of articles from local, national, and international newspapers, magazines, and trade journals as well as newswires, business information, patents, legal documents, and transcripts of radio and television broadcasts.

  • OmniFile FullText Mega
    (1982 to present) Indexes articles from over 3,000 scholarly and popular periodicals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences; also includes the full text of selected articles from over 1,650 of these periodicals.

  • Project Muse
    (c. mid-1990s to present) A searchable collection of full-text articles from journals published by university and scholarly presses.

  • Reader’s Guide Abstracts
    (1890 to present) Indexes articles in over 300 popular magazines published in the United States.  Covers a wide variety of subjects, including art, business, education, food, foreign affairs, political science, religion, science, sports, and health and nutrition.  Also indexes book and film reviews.
