Finding Cases

If you are looking for cases on a particular topic, first consult the legal encyclopedias, medical history reference sources, and secondary sources to find citations to cases; you can then retrieve the cases in Westlaw Campus Research or LexisNexis. You can also search the following to identify cases:

    Includes the full text of federal and state court cases as well as American Law Reports, which summarizes cases on specific topics.

    Click on the "Law" tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, enter your search terms, and then choose the type of cases you want (all federal, all state, a particular state jurisdiction, or Supreme Court cases).

  • Academic Search Premier
    (1975 to present) Indexes popular and scholarly articles in a broad range of subject areas; also includes citations to book reviews and citations to articles in several national newspapers.
    Search Syntax
    Truncation: use an asterisk *.
    Phrase searching: use double quotation marks " ".
    Wildcard: use a question mark ?.
  • America: History and Life & Historical Abstracts
    (Time period covered: 1450 to present [world history]; prehistory to present [U.S. and Canadian history]. Publication coverage: 1954 to present). Indexes journal articles, book chapters, doctoral dissertations, and book reviews. (Each database can also be searched separately.)
    Search Syntax
    Truncation: use an asterisk *.
    Phrase searching: use double quotation marks " ".
    Wildcard: use a question mark ?.
  • Index to Legal Periodicals
    (1982 to present) Indexes articles from over 1,000 legal periodicals, including law reviews, as well as yearbooks, bar association publications, court decisions, government documents, books, and book reviews. Includes the full text of selected articles from 1994 to the present. International in scope.
    Note: to find articles published from 1952-1981, consult Index to Legal Periodicals, shelved in the Reference Index area at call number R 050 I38.
    Search Syntax
    Truncation: unnecessary when using "All - Smart Search"; otherwise, use an asterisk *.
    Phrase searching: use double quotation marks "".

  • LexisNexis Academic
    (Approx. 1980 to present) Includes the full text of articles from law reviews as well as local, national, and international newspapers, magazines, and trade journals. Also includes transcripts of radio and television broadcasts.
    To find articles from legal newspapers and law reviews:
    In the upper left-hand corner of the main search screen, choose the "Legal Research" search form," then under "Secondary Literature," select either "Legal news" or "Law reviews."

  • Medline (PubMed)
    (1966 to present) Includes citations and abstracts to the worldwide biomedical literature; also includes some full text articles. Covers over 4,600 journals.

  • PAIS International
    (1915 to present) Indexes journal articles, books, government documents, and conference papers in political science, public affairs, and economics.
    Search Syntax
    Truncation: use an asterisk *.
    Phrase searching: automatic.

  • Social Sciences Abstracts
    (1907 to present [publication date of articles indexed]) Indexes journal articles and some book reviews on all social sciences subjects, including history, political science, international relations, law, economics, area studies, gender studies, anthropology, psychology, and sociology.
    Search Syntax
    Truncation: unnecessary when using "All - Smart Search"; otherwise, use an asterisk *.
    Phrase searching: use double quotation marks "".

  • Westlaw Campus Research
    Contains full text articles from over 800 law reviews and journals as well as news sources, important primary law and analytical sources, including state statutes, federal statutes published in the U.S. Code Annotated, federal and state cases, including Supreme Court cases, federal regulations published in the Federal Register and Code of Federal Regulations, European Union law, American Law Reports, and American Jurisprudence, 2nd, an important encyclopedia covering state and federal law.
