NetLibrary e-Audiobooks

Electronic Audiobooks are now available!

The Davidson College Library now has access to a collection of nearly 1,000 electronic audiobooks; you can check these audiobooks out for three weeks and download them to your personal computer or listen to them on your MP3 player.

This collection is made available by the North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (NC LIVE), a consortium of public libraries, community college libraries, libraries at independent colleges and universities (such as Davidson), and libraries in the state's university system. What titles are available in the e-audiobook collection?

The NetLibrary e-audiobook collection contains nearly 1,000 unabridged titles, including contemporary fiction and non-fiction as well classic novels. It also contains the Pimsleur Language Series, a collection of language lessons for beginners, intermediate speakers, and ESL students; the Pimsleur collection covers 39 languages, including Arabic, Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin), French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

How do I access the e-audiobooks?

  1. Connect to NetLibrary's Audiobooks.

    You can also access the NetLibrary e-audiobook collection from the Library's Indexes & Databases pages.
    Note: If you are not affiliated with Davidson College, please see our guide How to Access NC LIVE resources.
  2. Create a NetLibrary account.
    You need to create an account in order to download and listen to the audiobooks. To create an account, click on the "Create a free account" link in the upper right-hand corner of the NetLibrary screen and then enter your name, e-mail address, and a password of your choosing.
  3. Search for or browse the available audiobooks to find the ones you want.


Downloading e-audiobooks

System requirements:

  • Browser:
    • Internet Explorer 5.5. or higher
    • Netscape Navigator 6.2 or higher
    • Mozilla 1.1
    • Firefox (Firebird) .06 or higher
    • Opera 7.x
    • Camino 0.7 or higher
  • Cookies: enabled
  • Media Player:
    • Windows Media Player 9 or higher
    • Musicmatch Jukebox 8.2 or higher
    • Nullsoft Winamp 5 or higher

Instructions:

  1. When you've found a title you want, click on the "Download this audiobook" link.
  2. Select the download quality you want.
  3. Choose to "Save" the audiobook on your personal computer.
    Note: Please do not download an audiobook to a Library or ITS lab computer.
  4. After the audiobook has downloaded, open the audiobook from within Windows Media Player.
  5. The checkout period for audiobooks is three weeks. You may renew an audiobook a second time if you wish. After the checkout period expires, you will not be able to access the audio file.
  6. You may have up to ten active e-audiobooks at any one time.

Transferring an e-audiobook file to a portable device

System Requirements:

  • Using Windows Media Player 9
    1. Find your CD-quality downloaded audiobook file and double-click it to open it with Windows Media Player. When Windows Media Player opens, it will obtain the license from NetLibrary to allow the audiobook file to play.
    2. Select "Copy to CD or Device" from the media player's menu options. A list of available titles will appear in the "Items to Copy frame."
    3. Select the title you want to transfer.
    4. Select a target device from the "Items on Device" drop-down menu. Make sure that your portable device is connected and then click on the "Copy" button to transfer the title.
    5. Windows Media Player will transfer the file to your portable device. When the transfer is complete, you can disconnect your portable device.
      Note: For some MP3 players, you will need to select the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon (on the taskbar of your computer) before removing the USB cable.

  • Using Windows Media Player 10
    1. Find your CD-quality downloaded audiobook file and double click it to open it with Windows Media Player. When Windows Media Player opens, it will obtain the license from NetLibrary to allow the audiobook file to play.
    2. You may stop playback at this point if you choose. Click on the "Library" tab. The media library will appear.
    3. Find your audiobook in the "Library Playlist" pane or sort your list by selecting the "Now Playing" selection.
    4. Drag the audiobook title from the "Contents or Details" pane in your library to the "List" pane. Make sure that your portable device is connected and then click the "Start Sync" button in the "List" pane. Windows Media Player will transfer the file to your portable device.
    5. When the transfer is complete, the status field will indicate "Complete." You can then disconnect your portable device.
      Note: For some MP3 players, you will need to select the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon (on the taskbar of your computer) before removing the USB cable.
