Law Databases

  • ECOLEX: The Gateway to Environmental Law
    A database on global environmental law operated by the the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Contains citations to articles on environmental law from countries around the world. Links to full-text, when available, are included. (You may have to search in the Davidson College Library Catalog for the full-text of some articles.)

  • Index to Legal Periodicals Full Text
    (1908 to present) Indexes articles from over 1,000 legal periodicals, including law reviews, as well as yearbooks, bar association publications, court decisions, government documents, books, and book reviews. Includes the full text of selected articles from 1994 to the present. International in scope.

  • LexisNexis Academic
    Provides the full text of United States law reviews and journals. To find articles in law reviews, click on "US Legal" under the "General Searching" tab and then choose "Law Reviews." The search can be limited by clicking on "Environmental Law" in the "Limit to" area. You may also view Canadian law reviews by choosing "International Legal" under the "General Searching" tab and clicking on "Canadian Law Journals."
    Note: To search by subject, click on the "Subject Areas" tab under "General Searching" anc choose "Environmental Studies." In the "Select Sources" area, choose one or more sources related to environmental law or news and then conduct your search.

  • Westlaw Campus Research
    Contains full-text news and legal materials. The Law section contains over 800 law reviews and journals. To search for law reviews, click on the "Law" tab and limit your search to "Journals and Law Reviews"; you can further limit by state.
    Note: For an overview of environmental law, including descriptions of key topics, FAQs, and suggested resources, go to the Law section. On the left-hand side of the page, you'll see a Shortcuts section. Scroll down to Legal Guide and click on Environmental Law.

Environmental Science Databases

  • Environment Abstracts
    (1975 to present) Indexes articles on topics related to environmental issues, impacts, laws, policies, and technologies, including biodiversity, energy, land use, pollution, population studies, resource management, sustainable development, and more. Covers over 950 journals.

  • GreenFILE
    (c. 1970s to present) Indexes articles on topics related to the human impact on the environment; covers global climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. Includes citations to articles in scholarly, popular, and trade periodicals; also includes full text for more than 5,800 records.

  • GREENR: Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources
    Includes a wide variety of materials on sustainability and environmental issues, including articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers; referred case studies; videos; podcasts; and images. Also includes country, organization, and issue/topic portals.

Political Science Databases

  • PAIS International
    (1915 to present) Contains citations, with brief abstracts, to articles in over 800 English-language journals in public affairs. Also indexes government documents, pamphlets, directories, agency reports, and some books. Covers government, public administration, public policy, court decisions, political science, and international relations.

  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
    (1975 to present) Includes citations to articles appearing in over 1,000 political science journals. Covers the fields of comparative politics, economic policy, international relations, and political economy, among others. International in scope.

Newspaper Databases

  • LexisNexis Academic
    (c. 1980 to present) Provides the full text of articles from local, national, and international newspapers, magazines, and trade journals as well as newswires, business information, patents, legal documents, and transcripts of radio and television broadcasts.

  • Library PressDisplay
    Contains full-page, full-color images of over 400 national and international newspapers, including many foreign-language newspapers; includes the current day's papers as well as a 60-day archive.
    Note: Up to three people can search this database at any one time; if you are unable to login because this limit has been reached, please wait a few minutes and try again.

  • Newspaper Source Plus
    Contains the full text of articles in over 149 national and international newspapers, including The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, and the Washington Post; also contains selected full text from 410 additional U.S. newspapers and transcripts of radio and television broadcasts.

  • Westlaw Campus Research
    Contains full text news and legal materials. The "News & Information" section contains articles from magazines, national and international newspapers, and business, professional, and trade journals as well as newswires, newsletters, and transcripts of television broadcasts.

  • World News Connection
    (1995 to present) Contains full-text, English-language summaries and translations of foreign news reports, conference proceedings, radio and television broadcasts, periodicals, non-classified technical reports, and other local media sources from around the world. Covers political, scientific, socioeconomic, technical, and environmental issues and events. These materials are provided by the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) to the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). Earlier years of the FBIS Reports are available on microfiche and CD-ROM.

Federal and State

  • LexisNexis Academic
    Contains the full-text of most cases published in the federal, regional, state, and subject reporters. (Some older state cases may be missing.) Also includes federal statutes, codes, and regulations and state codes and regulations.

  • Westlaw Campus Research
    Contains important primary law sources as well as analytical sources, including state statutes, federal statutes, federal and state cases, and federal regulations. Be sure to click on "Law" tab to view legal materials.

  • Legal Information Institute
    From the Cornell Law Schoo. Provides the full text of U.S. Supreme Court Opinions (1990 to present) as well as other federal and state court decisions. Also includes the text of the current U.S. Code, the U.S. Constitution, and state constitutions and codes and provides background information on a variety of legal topics.

Foreign and International

  • ECOLEX: The Gateway to Environmental Law
    A database on global environmental law operated by the the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). You may search by treaties, court decisions, or legislation.

  • EUR-Lex
    Provides free access to European Union law. Search for treaties, legislation, case law, and legislative proposals. The full-text of the Official Journal of the European Union is also available.
    To find European Union case law, do a "Simple Search" and choose "Case-law" in "Search by file category." To browse by case law, click here. Scroll to the bottom of the screen to view case law by specific year.

  • Foreign Law Translations
    From the University of Texas School of Law. Contains English translations of legal materials from Germany, France, Austria, and Israel.

  • Global Courts
    Contains links to supreme court decisions for individual countries. Not all countries are represented; some countries are in their native language and/or require a password for access.

  • Law Library of Congress: Guide to Law Online
    Contains links to legal materials by country. From the Law Library of Congress.

  • LexisNexis Academic
    To find international legal materials, choose "International Legal" from the "General Searching" tab and click on "Canadian Cases," "Canadian Legislation," or "EU, Commonwealth, and Other Nations."

  • Westlaw Campus Research
    Includes the "European Union Case Law" (EU-CS) database, with the official case law reports from the European Court Reports and cases from the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance. Also includes the "European Union Case Law Locator" (EU-CASELOC), with decisions from Sweet & Maxwell reporters and Lloyd's Law Reports.
    To view items in these databases, click on the "Law" tab at the top left of the page. In the "Select Database(s)" area, scroll down to the "European Union Library" and check the boxes next to "European Union Case Law" and "European Union Case Law Locator." Fill out the search box and complete your search.

  • World Legal Information Institute (WorldLII)
    Provides access to legal and judicial information from around the world. The site is searchable by country, region, and topic.
