    Fall, 2000

    Masha Bessonov, James Mao, Tim Mao, and Jamie Shin will be attending NCSSM this fall. Brendan Janssen is at CPCC; Will Lloyd is at Wake Forest University; Behrooz Mostafavi is at UNC-Chapel Hill; Shaun Pack, Anand Patel, and Lori Peacock are at Duke University; Frances Schaeffer is at Agnes Scott College; Lauren Schoenheit is at the College of Charleston.


    April, 2000

    Ryan Vinroot is an author of in the first issue of the Rose Hullman Institute of Technology Undergraduate Mathematics Journal. Ryan's article, "Symmetry and Tiling Groups for Genus 4 and 5," is the result of an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) which he did at Rose Hullman in the summer of 1997. Ryan went from the NC School of Science and Mathematics to North Carolina State University where he received his BS in mathematics in 1998. He is currently in graduate school at Stanford University studying algebraic number theory and elliptic curves.


    March, 2000

    At the January, 2000, Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, DC, the Association for Women in Mathematics announced that Sarah Dean is a runner up for the Tenth Annual Alice T. Shafer Price to an outstanding young woman mathematician. Here is the AWM's announcement.

    Sarah E. Dean is a senior mathematics major at Duke University. She is a recipient of the prestigious Barry W. Goldwater Scholarship and participated in the Director's Summer Program at the National Security Agency during the summer of 1998. Her mentor at NSA describes her as "one of the top two performers in this fantastically talented group of 22."

    Her professors at Duke say that she "has taken nearly all the advanced undergraduate and most first and second year graduate courses at Duke" and is "one of the best undergraduates we have had at Duke University."

    Fall, 1999

    Jonathan Godshall and Mark Krasniewski are at Duke University; Ayan Kayal is at Yale University; Jackson Jones is at Bard College; Jordan Schwarz will be attending NCSSM this fall. Michael Crowell is studying engineering at Virginia Tech; and Annette McCoy is studying veternary science at Michigan State; Former CMC members Taylor Brockman, Jon Phillips and Peng Zang graduated from NCSSM in June.


    Summer, 1999

    The June, 1999, issue of the newsletter for the Florida Section of the American Mathematical Association contains the following news from Eckerd College:

    Graduating senior Soupy Alexander made a presentation at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research entitled Degree Theory of Accretive and Monotone Operators. The conference was held on the campus of the University of Rochester, April 8-10. Also, Soupy was one of two students this year to be awarded the "Scholarship & Service" award from the college's Natural Sciences Collegium.
