November, 2005

Our December 17 meeting is our annual holiday gathering, starting at 10 a.m., and featuring the popular pizza matrix. Our special guest at this meeting will be Prof. Emeritus J. B. Stroud of Davidson College. Prof. Stroud will reveal some of the mathematics in the paintings of cartoonist-author-artist and amateur mathematician Crockett Johnson (author & illustrator of the "Harold and the Purple Crayon" children's book series). Don't miss this opportunity to hear Prof. Stroud's discussion of Barnaby and the Purple Heptagon!

For more information on Crocket Johnson, see the CJ web page.

We apologize to those inconvenienced---our spring newsletter (and p.r. items) advertised February 7 as the date for our February meeting, in conflict with the posted listing of meeting dates and the fall newsletter. February 7 conflicts with testing at PDS---the February 14 date is correct.

Thanks to the thirty students and to the adult volunteers that made yesterday's (October 20) CMC meeting such a great success! Here is a summary of the announcements made at that meeting:

September 30, 2001

On Wednesday, October 3, at 8 pm, the 2001 Bernard Lecture at Davidson College features Prof. Carl Pomerance, a number theorist from the University of Georgia and Lucent Technologies. See the lecture announcement for details.

Plans are afoot for another year of CMC participation in the Mandelbrot Competition. Contact Mrs. Nita Jakubisin if you are interested in participating.

We do not have dues, but we do invite members to help our bottom line by contributing snacks to the meetings. Please let Susan Schaeffer know if you can help in this way. (Note: food that doesn't leave a mess behind is preferred!)

November 18, 2000

Have an idea for a t-shirt design? The 2001 College of Charleston Math Meet T-Shirt Design Contest is now underway. Here is the announcement from their web page:

Designs for the 2001 College of Charleston Math Meet T-Shirt should be submitted by individual students by December 8, 2000. Designs should be original, mathematical in nature, and simple enough to be printed on a T-shirt. All designed become property of the College of Charleston. Judges hold the right to vary a design for suitability. We encourage collaboration with other departments when creating a design. Designs may come from science, art, or even poety. NCTM publications might be a source for ideas for winning designs.
The 1997 winning design was based on a fractal and contributed by our own Lauren Schoenheit and Elizabeth Kroboth.

The results are in: The Charlotte Math Club had a very successful weekend at the College of Charleston Math Meet 2000!! Details can be found at CMC Award Winners at 1996-2000 Math Meets.

We will be offering the Tournament of Towns contest, both junior and senior levels, during the next Math Club meeting, March 18. Because of the length of the contest (4 - 5 hours), we will be opening our meeting rooms at 8:30 for those who would like to take part in this contest. For a description of the contest, click here. If you have any questions, contact Susan Schaeffer or Harold Reiter or Stephen Davis. (Training problems are now available from Prof. Davis.)

October 29, 1999

Professor James Kuzmanovich of Wake Forest University will be our guest speaker at the December 18, 1999, meeting. Prof. Kuzmanovich will talk on "My Favorite Mathematical Stamps." Also joining us in December will be CMC alumni on holiday break, and we'll fill out the annual pizza matrix for our lunch order. To accommodate a pizza lunch, the December meeting time moves to 10 am - 1 pm.

We will be offering the Tournament of Towns contest, both junior and senior levels, during the next Math Club meeting, November 6. Because of the length of the contest (4 - 5 hours), we will be opening our meeting rooms at 8:30 for those who would like to take part in this contest. For a description of the contest, click here. If you have any questions, contact Susan Schaeffer or Harold Reiter or Stephen Davis.

Charlotte Math Club will not be participating in the Mandelbrot Competition and the Mandelbrot Midlevels Competition this year. Perhaps we will be in a better position to participate next year. We strongly recommend that you urge your school to participate in the competition. (There's still time left to register before the deadline, October 22.)

CMC has been invited to participate in this year's Duke Math Meet. It will be held on the Duke University campus, from 10:30 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 13. The contest will be in the style of the American Regions Math League contest. The problems are at the high school level, including algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus. CMC may bring up to two teams of five students each, and no more than two alternates. More information about the contest, including rules and the problems from last year's contest, are at the Math Meet website. If you are interested in participating in this competition, please contact Susan Schaeffer as soon as possible. We plan to register by October 31. Students who respond early and those who are upper level math students (in Algebra II, Pre-calculus, etc.) will have first priority for the teams. As always, if your school is participating in this contest, you should participate on your school's team, not with CMC.

The College of Charleston will again be having a t-shirt design contest as part of their Math Meet in February. If you are interested in submitting a design for the official contest t-shirt, please contact Stephen Davis for further details! (Lauren Schoenheit and Elizabeth Kroboth, CMC members, submitted the winning T-shirt design for the 1997 competition!)

May 30, 1999

See CMC alumnus Nathan Bronson at the International Collegiate Programming Contest, held at the Technical University of Endhoven, The Netherlands, where he coached the Duke team to sixth place in the world. (Click on the top 10 teams link at the bottom of the page)

January 5, 1999

Congratulations to Anders Kaseorg, Lori Peacock, and Charlotte Country Day teacher Daren Starnes, on their recognition by the North Carolina Board of Education for their outstanding mathematical achievements. See the story in the January 3 issue of the Observer's Mecklenburg Neighbors.
