German Studies Students to Present at National Undergraduate Research Conference

Laya ByrnZhan '19 and Léonie Kirchgeorg '19 have been invited to present at the Sixth Conference for Undergraduate Research in German Studies at Lafayette College on April 16, 2016. Both of their papers are based on research projects they completed in the Fall of 2015 as part of their course Introduction to German Cultural Studies with Prof. Caroline Weist.

Prompted by her interest in Weimar-era culture, ByrnZhan's paper is titled "Graphic Representation of Weimar Tensions" and explores the representation of the social and political upheaval of interwar Germany in Jason Lutes' graphic novel Berlin, City of Stones. Kirchgeorg's paper, "Schellenursli als Träger der Engadiner Kultur - Erörterung des Chalandamarz anhand Kinderliteratur," draws on her research on Swiss identity, as well as theories on the multivalent function of children's literature. More information on the projects that inspired these papers can be found on their websites linked above.
