Join us March 11 for an Open Conversation on Tech Topics

by Mur Muchane

On Tuesday, March 11, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., we invite you to a drop-in conversation session with ITS staff in Alvarez 209.  We have planned a few topics as conversation starters, including:

Google Glass – a wearable computer with optical head-mounted display. Staff and students from Studio M will be on hand to talk and/or show Google Glass, microcontroller robotics, ongoing developments in 3D printing, and new expanded hours for the campus makerspace.

Class Roster and Web Tree Analysis Reports – As the result of a collaboration between the Registrar’s Office and ITS, some very useful reports have recently been developed and are now available to faculty. One is a print-on-demand Class Roster report, including student photographs. The other is a report analyzing students’ WebTree choices. Come see these in action. Also, if you haven’t yet had much exposure to DegreeWorks, this will be an excellent opportunity to see it up close and ask any questions.

Cisco Unified Communications – a major upgrade to our old telephone system, updating traditional telephone services with a full suite of 21st century communications tools.

Mobile Device Security – Your tablet or smart phone enhances your life because it is portable. It also carries added security risks because it can be easy to misplace, lose, or be stolen. Learn about some simple security measures you can take to minimize the risk.

Office 2013 and Apple OS Mavericks – These upgrades will be available to campus beginning Monday, March 10. Stop by to chat about these upgrades and look for the announcements on Inside Davidson.

Phishing – If one person responds to a phishing email, it has a serious and cascading impact on the entire campus. Learn about how you can be the first line of defense against such attacks.

Help Services – Learn about the new Knowledgebase, Self-service, and Requests offerings.

Lenovo – ITS is evaluating this hardware vendor to expand the desktop and laptop offerings made available to campus.

Adobe – Due to changes in their licensing structure, Davidson has a new agreement with Adobe. Learn how this new agreement may change installations on campus.

As always, refreshments will be available. We look forward to chatting with you about these and other technology topics.
