CBS Sunday Morning: Historic Achievement of 1896 Makes News 118 Years Later

by Davidson College

"This day in national history" came to Davidson on CBS Sunday Morning, when the show's "Almanac" segment featured the exploits of research students of Prof. Henry Louis Smith. Bribing a janitor to get into the lab, they photographed three bullets and a borrowed cadaver finger, among other objects.

Contemporary Davidson physicists now have a similarly momentous opportunity, if somewhat more rigorously controlled according to 21st-century scientific protocols. The Physics Department recently became the first non-governmental entity in the country to acquire a Digitome VXI-500Fx non-destructive imaging system.

Davidson's Junior Year Abroad program in Germany for many years was partnered with the University of Würzburg, where Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays.
