Bluebirds in North Carolina are happier these days, "back from the brink," reports the Charlotte Observer. Their numbers are up, in part, because Professor of Biology Mark Stanback and his students have erected hundreds of nest boxes in Pinehurst and the greater Charlotte area over the past 15 years.
But brown-headed nuthatches have not fared as well-yet. Now, Stanback and students are taking a closer look at the situation, including competition between the two avian species.
