The Charlotte Observer: North Carolina Unprepared for Landslide Hazard

Even as authorities in Washington continue to search for victims of the Oso landslide, Davidson Professor Brad Johnson warns that North Carolinians also are at risk. He points out in a Charlotte Observer op-ed piece that population is increasing in steep mountainous regions, where remnants of hurricane rainfall can trigger dangerous landslides, and calls for the legislature to prioritize funding for a statewide landslide hazard mapping team, which was among the first program to be cut from the 2011 budget.
