Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting: Patagonians Pinched by Choices for Energy Production

PatagoniaThe Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting independent international journalism, has carried three stories recently by environmental studies major Katie Mathieson '15 concerning Chile's quandary over energy production. Environmentalists blocked construction of a hydroelectric mega-dam in the country's remote, beautiful Patagonia region. But the alternative for home heating is burning wood, which results in deforestation and air pollution. In addition, Patagonians are uneasy about the purchase of large tracts of land by American environmentalists who want to implement their own agenda of conserving the land as a national park.
